Heat-Treated Glass

STRENGTH

VERSATILITY

Heat-treated glass undergoes a tempering process to increase strength and alter how it breaks. There are two types: fully tempered glass and heat-strengthened glass. Fully tempered glass is four times stronger than standard annealed glass and shatters into small, safe fragments, making it ideal for safety applications. Heat-strengthened glass is twice as strong as annealed glass and fractures in larger pieces, providing additional strength without meeting safety glazing standards.

Tempered glass is commonly used in sliding doors, storm doors, atriums, partitions, windows, storefronts, display cases, bath and shower enclosures and all-glass doors and entrances. Tempered glass should not be installed in areas where it is exposed to temperatures greater than approximately 400°F.

Due to its superior glass retention properties, heat-strengthened glass is the preferred heat-treated glass product for applications where additional strength is needed to meet mechanical loads (wind or snow) or thermal loads caused by certain tinted or coated glasses.

Heat-strengthened glass is widely used in laminated glass for additional strength, such as in overhead and sloped glazing. Heat-strengthened glass cannot be used in any safety glazing applications.

Key Benefits:

  • Enhanced Safety: Fully tempered glass meets safety glazing standards and reduces injury risks.
  • Increased Strength: Both tempered and heat-strengthened glass provide greater resistance to impact, thermal stress, and mechanical loads.
  • Versatility: Options available for different strength needs and applications, from safety-critical areas to load-bearing installations.

Features:

  • Types: Fully tempered and heat-strengthened options.
  • Breakage Characteristics: Tempered glass shatters into small, safe pieces; heat-strengthened glass retains larger fragments.
  • Applications: Tempered glass is suited for safety glazing, doors, and partitions; heat-strengthened glass is ideal for areas exposed to wind, snow loads, and thermal stress.
